Growing up in Kansas, landing in a windswept dustbowl not long after the Great Wizard set up court in the Emerald City, I was only remotely aware of Tito and his unique stature and strength in facing down the Russian Soviet hegemony, but I hadn't followed closely the details of how his partisan army had pushed out the Nazis and his rivals for leadership and therefore he felt, quite properly, that unlike most of the Soviet States essentially established thanks to the Red Army, his country stood on it's own, and, as I did realize, he did manage, during a long reign, to prevail in that manner. Slovenia's unique future as the rest of Yugoslavia fell apart had not come home to me until today as you explained it from your present time visiting. Fascinating. Thanks for your insights and adding to my knowledge.
Thanks, Jay. I knew the broad outlines myself, but visiting the place and digging into the details made the whole story come alive. It really is a remarkable piece of history.
Slovenia is indeed a very nice place. Up north and much more part of the German sphere of influence than anything else. So they managed to get out of trouble quite easily.

Amazing such a company is doing so good in a country riddled by so much debts... Maybe that's where all the money is going.
appreciate the history lesson from a former Soviet. Tito was scary, but he gets points for poking Stalin. This provides another example of "the market will find a way" even though it took decades. Bravo to Slovenia for quickly turning from communism and turning a beautiful place into something all can appreciate.
Thanks, Thomas. That’s more or less how I see Tito too... def no hero, but anyone who told Stalin where to go gets at least a few points in my book. And Slovenia really does seem to have made the most of its second chance.

Just missed you Lau I passed through Lake Bled mid last week returning from Udine and Treviso, Italy. Wife and daughter wanting to stop in at Lake Bled unfortunately it was extremely busy with traffic bumper to bumper.
Small world, Pete. We arrived just a few days after you. And yes, Bled is beautiful, but yeah, the traffic and crowds at this time of year are something else. Then we saw the crowds in Ljubljana and ran for the hills, literally. :)
